If you are having some sort of procedure which requires you to be on one foot, I highly recommend a knee scooter over crutches. I've been able to get around the house very easily with my knee scooter. Even when we first came in the door from the hospital and I was still pretty lightheaded, I was able to get around without the fear of falling. Plus, it's just fun to ride! :)

Dana,
ReplyDeleteBeen praying for you since the surgery. Just got on to your site. We are believing for great results. Both Tanner and Zach have had extensive foot surgery due to CMT. I'm very interested in watching your progress. Thanks for putting this site together. God Bless,
Dave Hockett
I appreciate the prayers. So far everything has gone well and I'm feeling pretty good. I didn't realize Tanner & Zach had gone through foot surgery...I feel for them. It's not too much fun. But you know, they say we are only about 10 years away from a cure for CMT. So, I'm just hoping my kids won't have to deal with this stuff when they are my age.
ReplyDeleteDana, Your foot looks Awesome! You will be a new person. Prayers are being answered. Keep up the PMA!

Yeah, isn't it just crazy what modern medicine can do now? Just think how much this would've helped Grandma if this type of thing would've been available when she was younger! It could've made a huge difference in her balance and mobility during her later years.
ReplyDeleteHiya, I am Laura, I am 28, and I am living in England. I came across your page while trying to find information about Pes Cavus surgery, for which I can't really find anything helpful. At the moment my feet look very similar to yours before the op. It has been very difficult to live with feet like this but i've struggled through. Unfortunately I have started having a lot of problems with pain and aching that has become unbearable, not to mention all the cuts and sores I get from shoes rubbing. I am due to have surgery on my foot on October 28th, once I am recovered I will then be having my other foot done. From what I can see I am having the same operation that you have had.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for creating this page so I am prepared for what is to come. I had a Ganz Osteotomy on my right hip about 7 years ago as my hips are displaced and then I had a hip replacement last year as arthritis had worn my hip away. I am hoping that if I can get through that I can get through this too! Fingers crossed! I will keep tracking your progress and I may come on and let you know how i'm doing to!

Laura, So glad to hear from you. I also had difficulty finding info on this surgery so I created my blog in an effort to help others like me. I'm glad you were able to find it.
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning I was really afraid that my foot wouldn't look much different & I'd still have issues with sores from shoes but when they removed the first cast & I got a good look at my foot I was very pleased! My toes are straight & flat and my arch is of normal height. Also, the pain wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined it would be. Don't get me wrong, the first few days were no fun but after that it wasn't all that bad. After a week I was roaring to get out of the house and go out to dinner! The doctor hasn't cleared me to walk on my foot yet, so I don't know for sure if my balance will be improved but with such nice flat feet to walk on I can't imagine that it would be anything other than better.
I hope it all goes as well for you. I'll be praying for you on Oct 28th. That's also the day that I'm supposed to get my first walking-cast...so it will be an important day for both of us! Please let me know how things go.

Hiya Dana,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your reply! It's nice to know I have someone I can chat to while im recovering that understands! Hope you are feeling well today! I am of the same thinking that if the foot is flat on the floor then surely our balance must improve. I am also hoping I wont get the same aches and pains that I am at the moment, which im sure are caused by the strain of not walking on my feet properly! I really hope I can finally get my feet into a normal pair of shoes, that would be great!
I was just wondering how much swelling you have. I was told that swelling could be a problem for 6 months to a year after surgery so im not really sure what to expect my feet to look like! I know your in a cast so you may not know the extent of the swelling at the moment!
Yes October 28th will be an important day for us both!

Yes, it's nice to be able to talk to someone who really understands what it's like to have feet like this. I've also had issues with pain when on my feet too long...I'm hoping that will be a thing of the past when this is all done.
ReplyDeleteI had also heard that swelling would be an issue for 6 months or so. I don't think I've really had too much swelling yet. As you can see in the pictures of my foot out of the cast, it does look a little puffy, especially near the toe area but I would expect a little swelling from the broken bones anyway. My foot does get loose in the cast within just a few days of the cast being put on but I'm not sure if that's due to swelling that's going down or shrinkage of my leg...maybe a combination of both? I've been very good about following the doctor's instructions to keep my foot elevated so that's probably why I haven't had more swelling. I would expect the swelling to begin being more of an issue once I start walking on the foot. I'm hoping it won't be too bad. My goal is to try to recover enough to get my other foot operated on before the end of the year (for insurance reasons). I'm not sure how realistic that goal is....we'll have to see how it goes. :)
